Andrea Messineo
Problems in living often result when
persons “talk past” one another, appearing
to engage in dialogue while in fact the unacknowledged
differences in their language and frameworks limit them
to monologue. Andrea Messineo did her doctoral research
on overcoming such communication difficulties between
incommensurable worldviews, earning her Ph.D. in Philosophy
from the University of St. Thomas, Houston, Texas, in
2008. She completed her M.S. in Psychology from Our Lady
of the Lake University (Houston) in 2010, where she focused
on the philosophical underpinnings of postmodern approaches
to counseling, and also carried out an independent study
of Jung and social constructionism. She has been an adjunct
instructor of Philosophy, and previously had a career
in the financial industry for over a decade.
Andrea Messineo has been a Certified
Member of APPA since 2001. Licensed by the state of Texas
as a Marriage and Family Therapist Associate and as a
Professional Counselor Intern in 2010, her professional
approach includes a commitment to honoring clients’
own wisdom and experience while collaboratively creating
new solutions through dialogue. She remains aware of the
culturally and historically conditioned status of concepts
relating to mental illness, and prefers to encounter clients
in a Socratic attitude of “not-knowing,” or
of needing to learn about their own unique experience,
even when a diagnosis (such as depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive
disorder, or borderline personality disorder) has already
been assigned.
