Rony Guldmann

I did my undergraduate work at the University of Michigan and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and received my Ph.D. from Indiana, I now teach philosophy at Hofstra and Iona universities.

In my dissertation, Two Orientations Toward Human Nature, I argue that that human nature is heroic rather than egoistic. Our desire to view ourselves heroically propels us towards the uncritical acceptance of social conventions, ideals whose widespread acceptance helps buttress our conviction in our heroic stature. But this may cause us to do violence to our individual uniqueness. Heroism and individuality seem to be in a state of permanent tension. I conclude that there are no easy solutions to this dilemma, certainly none that will apply to all individuals at all times. Nevertheless, a deeper appreciation of this structural feature of human existence can assist individuals in making better sense of their lives.

I believe philosophy exists to address questions that have no final answers but which we nonetheless cannot help but ask. As a philosophical counselor, I help clients understand the ways in which they’ve already addressed philosophical problems and then guide them towards doing so with greater self-awareness. With this general goal in view, I am open to discussing whatever is on your mind. I charge $60/hour.
